Tennessee House Republicans on Wednesday formally requested that Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) immediately halt gender surgeries on children.

In a letter signed by 62 state House members, Republican Rep. Jason Zachary said he and his colleagues are “alarmed” by reports about the “surgical mutilations of minor children” at VUMC’s Pediatric Transgender Clinic. “The Vanderbilt Pediatric Transgender Clinic’s practices qualify as nothing less than abuse,” the letter stated.

“We, the elected representative body of the state of Tennessee, ask members of the VUMC Board of Directors to take immediate action by halting all permanent gender transitioning surgeries being performed on minor children,” the lawmakers wrote.

The letter also requested that VUMC honor all “conscientious objectors” who refuse to participate in the surgeries due to their religious beliefs.

“Tennesseans across our state have demanded a swift response and a call to action. We agree that these revelations require the legislature to act immediately,” the letter stated.

Last week, a groundswell of lawmakers demanded an investigation into the Nashville pediatric gender clinic after shocking videos showed a Vanderbilt doctor calling certain transgender surgeries “huge money makers.” A health law expert also called conscientious objections to transgender surgeries “problematic.”

The clinic performs “gender-affirming” double mastectomies on minor girls and offers puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors as well, according to an expose from The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh. In one video uncovered by Walsh, a Vanderbilt doctor affiliated with the adult transgender clinic, but not the pediatric one, can be seen emphasizing the dollar signs around gender surgery.

“It’s a lot of money. These surgeries make a lot of money,” VUMC Clinic for Transgender Health’s Dr. Shayne Sebold Taylor said. Taylor said that “gender-affirming” double mastectomies could bring in $40,000, and a female-to-male phalloplasty could bring in upwards of $100,000.

Another doctor says that objecting to gender surgery for religious or other reasons should have “consequences.” “I just want you to take home that saying that you’re not going to do something because of your religious beliefs is not without consequences and it should not be without consequences,” said Vanderbilt health law expert and pediatrician Dr. Ellen Wright Clayton. “If you don’t want to do this kind of work, don’t work at Vanderbilt,” Clayton added.

Zachary, who represents the Knoxville area, said Wednesday that he finds the hospital’s apparent desire to profit from gender surgeries concerning. “It is deeply troubling that Vanderbilt University Medical Center appears to be motivated by profits in its practice of recommending such radical and life-altering surgery for minors,” Zachary said Wednesday. “We expect Vanderbilt’s Board of Directors to simply do what is right by choosing to protect the well-being and health of vulnerable children,” he added.

Last week, the governor and state lawmakers said they were also discussing legislative solutions. Republican Governor Bill Lee’s office said he is in contact with the state’s top lawmakers about potential legislation. “We should not allow permanent, life altering decisions that hurt children, like we saw on display at VUMC. The Governor is in communication with Leader Johnson and Leader Lamberth about legislative solutions, and we look forward to working with them and many other Tennesseans who are passionate about protecting children,” Casey Sellers, a spokeswoman for the governor, told The Daily Wire last week in a statement.

The Pacific Legal Foundation filed suit on Tuesday against the Biden administration for its policy to cancel up to $10,000 in student debt for millions of borrowers.

The group argued in a complaint that President Joe Biden’s use of the HEROES Act, a 2003 law meant to aid Iraq War veterans and their families, as justification for the move occurred with “breathtaking informality and opacity.” Frank Garrison, a public defense attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation and the plaintiff in the lawsuit, will personally face a tax liability from the state of Indiana due to the cancellation of his debt.

“Congress did not authorize the executive branch to unilaterally cancel student debt,” Pacific Legal Foundation attorney Caleb Kruckenberg said in a statement. “It’s flagrantly illegal for the executive branch to create a $500 billion program by press release, and without statutory authority or even the basic notice and comment procedure for new regulations.”

The student loan cancellation plan applies to individuals earning less than $125,000 annually. Biden also decided to extend the pause on federal student loan repayment to January 2023 and will permit borrowers with undergraduate loans to cap payments at 5% of monthly income.

The complaint added that the Department of Education failed to comply with the “notice-and-comment process required for rulemaking” when charting the debt cancellation policy and did not “solicit any public input.”

“Cancelling student debt is unjust to those who have paid their loans or never took any. It will only lead to more calls for government intervention in education at taxpayers’ expense,” Pacific Legal Foundation senior attorney Steve Simpson added. “Loan cancellation will make Americans more divided, as those who paid their loans — or never went to college — will have good reason to think that we no longer have a government of, by, and for the people.”

Indeed, one-third of student debt is held by the wealthiest 20% of households, according to data from the Brookings Institution. In comparison, only 8% is owed by the bottom 20% — largely because graduate degrees are often necessary for high-paying professions.

Eliminating $10,000 of student loans per borrower will cost $298 billion in 2022 and a total of $329 billion by 2031 if the policy is renewed each year, according to a nonpartisan analysis from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, which also found that 42% of the benefit would impact Americans earning more than $82,400 per year. Another estimate from the Congressional Budget Office forecasts that the overall cost will be $400 billion, with another $20 billion incurred by the extended pause on repayments.

The Wharton analysts said that a permanent loan cancellation announcement could prompt students to “eventually reorganize their financing toward additional borrowing.” Although the policy could increase access to higher education, universities themselves could capture the value “in the form of higher prices” as they raise tuition.

The Pacific Legal Foundation contended that the student loan cancellation is an “election year ploy.”...

Over the past month, the shootings, kidnappings and murders plaguing the streets of Memphis were plastered on front pages and TV screens nationwide.

Ezekiel Kelly, who live-streamed a deadly shooting spree, had been released early after serving 11 months of his three-year sentence for felony aggravated assault.

These horrific acts of violence made headlines, but the resulting coverage exposed only a small portion of the crime wave devastating American cities and suburbs caused by the L desperate attempt to appeal to the radicals in their party.

These horrific acts of violence made headlines, but the resulting coverage exposed only a small portion of the crime wave devastating American cities and suburbs caused by the Liberal Democrats desperate attempt to appeal to the radicals in their party.

Since the summer of 2020, "Defund the Police" has transformed from a rallying cry of the far-left fringe to one of the Democratic Party’s most notorious platform planks. Presidential hopefuls, socialist "squad" members and then-Senator Kamala Harris have all joined the campaign to embolden criminals and undermine law enforcement, with disastrous results.

Now, Tennessee’s two U.S. senators have introduced legislation that would speed up the process of analyzing sexual assault kits after Memphis teacher Eliza Fletcher was abducted and killed by a habitual offender a few weeks ago.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said on Tuesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Dailywith host Alex Marlow that her Restoring Law and Order Act, co-sponsored with Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN), would redirect unspent federal funds ostensibly slated to address COVID-19 towards law enforcement.

“United States Senators Bill Hagerty (R-TN) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) introduced the Restoring Law and Order Act in response to the violence plaguing communities across America,” according to a joint press release. “Compared to mid-2019, America’s largest cities have seen a 50% increase in homicides and a 36% increase in aggravated assaults. In Tennessee, Memphis has experienced a series of shockingly violent crimes.”

The law will provide federal grants to local law enforcement for the purpose of hiring more law enforcement officers, detaining and deporting more illegal aliens, and reforming pretrial detention laws that the senators believe are too weak.

The bill also specifically addresses rape kits.  It will require the federal government to “study the deficiencies in processing rape kits and availability of the test kits” and give local law enforcement funding to “eliminate investigatory backlogs and more-quickly process criminal evidence.”

Blackburn also specifically addressed rape kits.

She said, “We need to increase funding for law enforcement, root out weak on crime prosecutors and judges, and keep violent criminals locked up. Senator Hagerty and I are introducing the Restoring Law and Order Act to ensure state and local law enforcement agencies have the resources needed to combat violent crime and improve the processing of DNA evidence such as rape kits. It is sad that in Washington, Democrats have made heroes out of criminals and turned police officers into villains. The defund the police movement is demanding compassion for criminals, but not their innocent victims. Senator Hagerty and I believe we must fund, not defund, the police and are proud to Back the Blue. This legislation will provide much-needed resources to our brave law enforcement officers so they can hunt down violent criminals and keep Tennesseans safe.”

Cleotha Henderson, the man charged in Fletcher’s murder, had spent nearly two decades behind bars for a previous kidnapping.

After he was released, he allegedly continued his pattern of behavior as a predator, including a 2021 alleged sexual assault of an as-yet-unidentified woman.

The sexual assault kit, which matched Henderson’s DNA, was not processed until just after Abston allegedly kidnapped and murdered Fletcher.

Had it been processed sooner, it is possible that Henderson would have been off the streets, and Fletcher would still be alive.

Blackburn says, “This legislation will help us identify deficiencies in processing evidence such as rape kits and increase resources for state and local law enforcement agencies to combat violent crime. It will take on the challenges law enforcement faces with funding to hire more police officers, detectives and trained lab personnel. In turn, law enforcement will have access to the manpower and evidence they need to keep rapists, drug dealers, murderers and other violent criminals behind bars. Senator Hagerty and I also sent a letter to Joe Biden demanding an end to his war on law enforcement.”

The Restoring Law and Order Act will increase resources for law enforcement by establishing a federal grant program to:

  • Hire more police officers and detectives, so that states can better target violent crime.

  • Provide funding for law enforcement agencies to target drug-related crimes such as fentanyl, which killed over 69,000 people in 2021.

  • Detain and deport illegal aliens who have committed crimes in the United States.

  • Use public safety tools such as bail and pretrial detention to prevent dangerous offenders from returning to communities.

The Restoring Law and Order Act will improve the processing of rape kits by:

  • Requiring the Government Accountability Office to study the deficiencies in processing rape kits and the availability of the test kits.

  • Giving state and local governments the funds to eliminate investigatory backlogs and more-quickly process criminal evidence.
